Foundation 5 & ie9 compatability mode

In Foundation 5, is it important if I miss out the line?
<!--[if IE 9]><html class="lt-ie10" lang="en" > <![endif]-->

For some reason, probably historic, in ie9 my site is loading in compatibility mode for people who have been using the site for many, many years. Now I'm on Foundation 5, I need to turn this compatibility mode off (easier than asking the users to turn it off). A 'X-UA-Compatible' line after the turns it off, but it only works if the conditional statement is deleted.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

This conditional lets you use a custom style class in you css for browsers older than IE9.

.it-ie10 {
    your custom styles for IE
}

This is no longer a default conditional as IE11 no longer recognizes this comment, so we removed it.
