Foundation can't find NodeJS

When I try to create a new foundation 5 project on Ubuntu 13.10 I get the following:

$ foundation new test
Can't find NodeJS. You can install it by going here: http://nodejs.org

...but...

$ sudo apt-get install nodejs
[sudo] password for paulus:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
nodejs is already the newest version.

I've searched google and forums for help but no one seems to have had this problem (or its painfully obvious and I'm just a noob.
