Foundation / Webpack - is it happening in 6.4?

Hello,

I've been watching how the subject of introducing JS module dependency loading in to Foundation has been unfolding and noticed this is set for a tentative 6.4 rollout. However, with the current architecture it has always appeared to be a tricky integration.

Today I looked at the Wiki Roadmap and the following two related items:

https://github.com/zurb/foundation-sites/wiki/Project-Roadmap#64-tentative-date-may

https://github.com/istrategylabs/mo-static/pull/74

The 1st link alludes to the tentative 6.4 rollout for Webpack - the 2nd link twice mentions this whole subject having potential to kill off Foundation.

So I have a few burning questions:

  • if I start a project now with 6.3 will I be able to upgrade to 6.4 or will it just be buggy? (this has happened before)
  • on reading the above github posts, is Webpack integration in 6.4 feasible?
  • is Foundation being killed off?

Thanks

 Hi

The Webpack rollout is being finalized for 6.4 and fully ready when 6.4 is released. If you are using Foundation as is it will work just fine upgrading to 6.4.

You can find the progress here: https://github.com/zurb/foundation-sites/issues/9438

If you'd like, you can checkout the branch before hand and try it out.

Foundation 6 will continue getting updates and building toward version 7. There will be a Foundation 8, 9, and 10 and so on.

 Hi Rafi,

Thanks for getting back on this, it's great news on all fronts and that progress post is one I've been following.

Will there be documentation for the 6.3.x-6.4 upgrade? I imagine this will be a fairly convoluted upgrade and I'm quite possibly going to be mid-project when it hits with currently a 6.3.1 build.

With each point release migrations are small and incremental without breaking changes. If there are deprecations, you'll see a version of warning before the feature is changed or removed.

I don't forsee any major migration in 6.4 from 6.3 - the Release Candidate will be available on Thursday this week so you can see :)
