I like to add my own custom.scss. Have you tried this?
Their you can add your custom changes and overwrite the styles and it wouldn't be crashed after an update.

You can try to add spaces to left or right at ".top-bar-section .has-dropdown > a:after" at css. For example:

.top-bar-section .has-dropdown > a:after{right:5px}

Try to add z-index:9; to your li class=active.

You can change the $topbar-breakpoint at _settings.css to the small breakpoint. Maybe you could minimize the padding inside of the top bar for medium-range so it fits to the viewport.

Example:
SASS
// Transitions and breakpoint styles
// $topbar-transition-speed: 300ms;
// Using rem-calc for the below breakpoint causes issues with top bar
$topbar-breakpoint: 768px; // Change to 9999px for always mobile layout
$topbar-media-query: "only screen and (min-width: #{$topbar-breakpoint})" !default;

Think you can't use article in this case. Outside of the columns it won't work but maybe you could take the article-tag inside of your columns. Have you tried that?

<div class="row">
    <div class="large-4 columns">
      <article>
          <a href="#" target="_blank" class="th"><img src="img/tutorials/illustrator/blend-tool-tn.jpg" alt=""/></a>
      <h6 class="panel">Adobe Illustrator Blend Too</h6>
    </article>
    </div>
    <div class="large-4 columns">
      <article>
        <a href="#" target="_blank" class="th left"><img src="img/tutorials/motion/particles-fall-scene-tn.jpg" alt=""/></a>
      <h6 class="panel">After Effects Particles</h6>
    </article>
    </div>
  <aside class="large-4 columns">
      <div>
        <a href="http://hagiasophiatourguide.com/" target="_blank" class="th right"><img src="img/hagia-sophia-app.jpg" alt="Hagia Sophia Tour Guide Application"></a>
      </div>
  </aside>
</div>

Maybe there is a problem with other included scripts? I tried your code at the standard index.html and it works fine.

Can you specify your problem?
If i am right you have startet a new foundation project. Is your problem the sass-compiling?

I'm using a custom scss because so there is a better overview at the custom made changes. Updates are often necessary so it's better for me. If you want to make only a few changes i think it's easier to make it in the foundation.scss.

Have you tried to use class="sticky" instead of class="fixed"?
