I think the links to the js, at the bottom are wrong. Anyway the below code worked for me.

<!DOCTYPE html>

<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
  <title></title>
  <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/styles/normalize.css" />
  <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css_foundation.css" />
</head>
<body style='color:black;'>
      <div class="row" data-equalizer>
              <div class="large-6 column" style="border: 1px solid red;" data-equalizer-watch>
                  Description<br />
                  more text<br />
                  These are supposed to be the same size!
              </div>

            <div class="large-6 column" style="border: 1px solid lime" data-equalizer-watch>
            The Description
            </div>

        </div>

      </header>

  <script src="js/vendor/jquery.js"></script>
  <script src="js/foundation/foundation.js"></script>
  <script src="js/foundation/foundation.equalizer.js"></script>

  <script>
    $(document).foundation();
  </script>

</body>
</html>

I'm a noobie to Foundation, but I think all you need to do is nest your divs.

<div class="show-for-medium-only">
<div class="show-for-portrait">
this should only show for med. portrait
</div>
<div class="show-for-landscape">
this should only show for med. landscape
</div>
</div>
