Remove the link to the JS file?

Here is the standard syntax for a button.

<a href="#" class="button">Default Button</a>

Now this is what I've did to change the background color of my icon...

  <a href="#" type="submit" class="button">
     <span>
        <i class="fa fa-check"></i>
     <span>
   </a>

I've added a so that in CSS I could target the icon itself. I believe that if you do this around the text as well, you should find a similar result.

Hope I could help!

Still doesn't work, I want the word "Projects" to disappear.

Possibly written in a different version of Foundation? I'm not sure if that would cause massive changes, but could be a viable possibility.

I took out the tags and replaced it with an icon from font awesome.

<li class="toggle-topbar menu-icon">
  <a href="#">
    <i class="fa fa-check"></i>
  </a>
</li>

Hey, can you provide us with your code? I have a similar problem, and feel I maybe of assistance. Also your picture was not properly attached.

You could even think about using a "panel" to house your content.

http://foundation.zurb.com/docs/components/panels.html

<body>
  <div class="panel">
    <h5>This is a regular panel.</h5>
    <p>It has an easy to override visual style, and is appropriately subdued.</p>
  </div>
</body>
body { background-color: black; }

.panel { background-color: white; }

But I believe Dave's idea is perfectly fine, just adding another perspective.
