Difference of value when utilizing @include breakpoint({variable} down)

When utilizing

@include breakpoint({variable} down) { property : value; }

Ex: @include breakpoint(large down) { color: red; }

and

@include breakpoint({value in pixels equal to the property} down) { property : value; }

Ex: @include breakpoint(1024px down) { color: red; }

the output is different, with the value of the breakpoint from the variable (not the litteral value of the variable) being larger: is it normal?
